I'm A Sun Goddess To My Pets

In the morning I say hi to our pets, and then I go over to the window and open the blinds. My dog and two cats run to me thinking, “She made the sun come out! Hooray!“

And then if it gets to be too hot so I’ll close the shades and they stare at me, with narrowed eyes that say, “She made the sun go away. What a party pooper.”

I try to explain to them about how the sun is always there no matter if there are clouds in the sky or curtains that are blocking the windows, and then I try to explain the earth’s rotation and that’s when they get really bored and just start licking their butt.

But it’s like that with spiritual awakening. The light is always there. It doesn’t go away. Our spiritual practices might help open the blinds. Meditation, prayer, sitting with a teacher, getting energy healing, being in silence, doing yoga. But it’s not the meditation or the prayer or the teacher. At some point you can rely on yourself to open to the light.

Sure clouds come and go. And there’s always nightfall, in which we are faced with our shadows, and our messy humanity with its insecurities and grasping. But the light is always there. It returns in the morning. And more and more we develop a faith and a realization that goes so deep, that even when the suns on the other side of the earth, we can still feel it. There is faith born of experience. We deeply know it’s what we are. We aren’t separate from the light.

But sometimes it’s nice to get a little help. So I pull the blinds up and my chihuahua wags her tail, looking at me with such love and gratitude. Who says she’s not awake already and is simply playing a game with me?
